Dr. Rex Honey graduated from Sweetwater High School and enrolled in Southwestern College where he played tight end and outside linebacker in 1963 and 1964, the college’s first winning season. He was voted Team Captain and the Most Valuable Player. In 1965, Rex also wrestled for SWC at the 177 lb. weight class and won the Pacific Southwest Conference Championship, qualifying for the State Meet. In addition, he was elected Associated Men Students’' President in 1964-65, and he was honored with the Man of the Year Award in 1965.

Rex transferred to University of California, Riverside and was selected UCR Football Player of the Year in 1966. He graduated in 1966 with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He was then awarded a National Defense Education Act Fellowship to attend graduate school at the University of Minnesota where he earned his M.A. in 1969 and his Ph.D. in 1972. In 1974 he was hired at the University of Iowa as a Professor of Geography.

Rex’s academic accomplishments have been impressive: Developed a system of regional planning for the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, 1984-85; Senior Fulbright Scholar, University of Canterbury, New Zealand, 1987; Secretary of the Commission of Geography and Public Policy, International Geographical Union, 1988-2004; Senior Fulbright Scholar, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, 1991-92; Chair of the Human Rights Specialty Group, Association of American Geographers, 1994-98; Director of Global Studies, University of Iowa, 1998-03; William Evans Scholar, University of Iowa Center of Human Rights, 1998-04; Director of African Studies, University of Iowa, 2003-05; Outstanding International Educator, University of Iowa 2004; Author/ Editor of five books or special issues of scholarly journals with more than 60 journal articles and book chapter.
