Bio

Cheryl Campbell’s many contributions to Southwestern College (SWC) have remarkably extended from 1979 to the present. She has been an outstanding student-athlete. An Assistant and Interim Head Women’s Basketball Coach, and finally an inspiration and quality Adjunct Exercise Science and Health Professor.

Cheryl attended Castle Park High School where she was a two sport student-athlete competing in basketball and softball. In 1979, she won the Highlander Leadership in Athletics Award, a prestigious honor reflecting not only her leadership but her dedication, work ethics and teamwork. She enrolled at SWC in 1979 and played intercollegiate basketball under Head Coach June Scopinich for two seasons. In 1980, Cheryl won the SWC team award for the most Defensive Tie-ups. In 1980-81, she also helped the “Apaches” win a Mission Conference Championship and was selected to the Mission All Conference Championship Team. She also holds the unofficial practice record for the Most Consecutive Free Throws with 51 baskets.

Cheryl transferred to California State University Hayward and played basketball for half season until a serious knee injury sidelined her. She graduated in 1984 with a B.A. in physical education and earned a teaching credential in 1986. During this time, Cheryl coached the girl’s junior varsity basketball team at Hayward High school for one year and the varsity team for four years.

Cheryl then moved back to her home town and began her 11-year basketball coaching career at SWC. She assisted John Newlee from 1986-1988 and Valerie Goodwin-Colbert from 1990-1993. In 1993, she became the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Mills College in Oakland, California. She later return to San Diego and worked at San Diego City, where she helped initiate Women’s Badminton in the Pacific Coast Conference. Cheryl moved to Cuyamaca College and helped administer its first Women’s Basketball program in 200-2001. She served as interim Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Grossmont College and she served as Interim Head Coach Goodwin-Colbert while she was on sabbatical.

Cheryl continues to teach a variety of physical and health classes. In addition she holds national certifications in life guarding, water fitness, nautilus, CPR and emergency response. For two years, she served as the Sophomore Showcase Director for the California Community College Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. She is also the co-owner of KC Sports Enterprises.
