Bio

George “Bud” Milke graduated in 1945 from high school in Antigo, Wisconsin where he played football and basketball. After spending two years in the United States Army, he attended San Diego State University from 1947 to 1951 participating once again on both the football and basketball teams.

After graduating with a B.A. in physical education and a minor in history, Bud was hired in 1951 as a teacher and coach by the Sweetwater Union High School District. During this time, he taught and coached at Mar Vista and Castle Park High Schools. In 1964, he was hired at Southwestern College and served in many capacities over his 28-year tenure. He was the Men’s Basketball Coach, Department Chairperson, Physical Education and History Professor, and Academic Senate Representative. If Bud could help he would. In 1983, Bud volunteered in a budget crunch to teach history for one year so a faculty member would not be riffle and lose his job, a testimony to s great man.

Bud also proudly volunteered as the official timer at SWC’s football games for almost 30 years and as the Men’s Basketball timer for 10 years. He was and continues to be competitive and ardent fan analyzing strategies, strengths and weaknesses of opponents and SWC athletes. He loves when the “Jags win.

Bud’s booming voice, great sense of humor, and his infectious laugh became his trademark. His always professional manner and the positive encouragement he freely provided day in and day out his many students on the tennis courts in the weight room mark him as one of the finest teachers and coaches ever served Southwestern College.

Bud retired in 1992 and continues to enjoy his retirement years, his family, and grandchildren. He still loves a contest and watches a basketball or football game here and there. He considers Southwestern his second home. Faculty still enjoys stories of old and the wink of a very special person.
