Bio

Beverly Schmidt graduated from North St. Paul High School in Minnesota in 1948. She participated in the Girls Reserve Club Sports Program of the Y.M.C.A. and has remained interested in women’s sports ever since.

Beverly was the first woman hired in the classified position of Women’s Athletic Equipment Person, witnessing and significantly contributing to the development of women’s athletics at Southwestern College. For 23 years, she prepared and distributed the women’s practice gear, equipment and travel bags for all women’s sports. Most importantly, she was a strong positive influence on the many women athletes she served for so many years, encouraging their participation and advising them in their studies and personal lives. She also maintained and checked our racquets, ball and other equipment to students and staff for the many physical education classes.

Beverly teamed with last year’s award winner, Shirlee Bonhag, to provide a home-away-from-home atmosphere to the Athletic and Physical Education Department staff with her calm demeanor, soft-spoken words, and friendly personality. She was instrumental in helping new coaches adapt to practice and game schedules and the many demands and stresses of coaching at the college level. She was always outstanding, productive and reliable asset to the College. Administrators, instructors, students and athletes valued her highly.

Since her retirement, Beverly and her husband Al enjoy square with the Alpine Square Dance Club. It is an absolute honor to welcome Bev into the Southwestern Athletic Hall of Fame.
