Bio

In 1964, June Scopinich graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Fine Arts and Education from the State University of New York, New Paltz, and in 1971 she earned a Master of Science in Physical Education from Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts.

By 1971-72, June was teaching and coaching women’s field hockey and lacrosse at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, where she won a championship with an undefeated record of 17-0. In 1972-74, she also coached Hampshire Regional High School to a Bi- County League Championship in basketball. Her many accomplishments helped her become Head Women’s Basketball Coach at the University of California at Berkeley.

In 1975, June was hired as a full-time Physical Education Professor and the Women’s Head Basketball Coach at Southwestern College (SWC). Her teams excelled! June coached three Mission Conference Championship Teams and three more second place finishes. In 1980-81, she was selected Mission Conference Coach of the Year while her team posted a 25-4 record. During her coaching tenure, June was named Director of Athletics in 1977 of 21 sports and became the first woman in the state of California to direct both a men’s and women’s athletic program.

She was later promoted to Dean of Exercise Science and Athletics where she served as a liaison for SWC’s Bay Front Aquatic Center and for the SD-Arco Olympic Training Center. An avid pioneer for women’s sports, she was instrumental in implementing fair and equitable policies for all student- athletes at SWC. Active at the local and state level, she was also the first woman in California to administrate the Southern Division of Football for the Mission Conference. In 1990, she was name a SWC Woman of Distinction as well, and nominated for the Who’s Who of American Women.

In 1994, June was hired at San Diego Miramar College as Vice President of Instruction serving until 2000. Returning to athletics, June was named the first Athletic Director at Miramar where she developed new facilities and programs. In 2004, Dr. Scopinich retired after dedication 40 years to education as a teacher, faculty member, coach, athletic director and administrator.
