Anthony “Tony” Young attended Morse High School from 198-1985 where he competed in baseball and football. A gifted athlete he lettered in both sports. In baseball, Tony was named captain of the 1985 baseball team and MVP as well as a member of the All Eastern League First Team. In football, he quarterbacked the 1985 team to the championship of the Eastern League.

Following high school, Tony enrolled at SWC and played baseball for Coach Jerry Bartow. A pitcher, he ended-up with a 13-5 record and was voted “Mr. Apache” by his team. On campus, Tony showed his propensity and talent for politics by becoming President of the Black Student Union.

Tony accepted a scholarship from Howard University and played on the intercollegiate baseball team. In his senior year, he was voted captain, MVP (with a combined record of 20-7) and named to the All Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference First Team.

After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Socio-Economics in 1989, Tony moved back to San Diego. He was awarded a full academic scholarship to the University of San Diego where he earned his teaching credentials. For nine years, Tony taught in the San Diego School District at O’Farrell and Muirlands Middle Schools.

Through his experience as a teacher, youth mentor, gang prevention specialist, hire-a-youth coordinator, AVID coordinator, and counselor for abused children, Tony realized that he was committed to the improvement of the local community. Devoted to San Diego, Tony turned to politics. He served as Chief of Staff to City Councilman Charles L. Lewis III, Legislative Aide to San Diego County Supervisor Leon Williams, and intern for Congressman Jim Bates. Elected to the City Council as the representative of the 4^th District, Tony has established three top priorities: public safety, community economic development and increasing the opportunities for young people to become successful.

Presently Tony proudly serves as: Chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee, co-chair of the Public Safety Committee, member of SANDAG Board of Directors Transportation Committee and the San Diego County Reginal Airport Authority and many other, too numerous to mention.

Tony’s best memory of his SWC baseball participation is learning to throw the Deadly Head Coach Jerry Bartow Curveball. He attributes his Howard University Scholarship offer directly to learning this new pitch.
