From 1967 to 1970 Francisco Sevilla attended Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach and competed on the Mariners’ varsity soccer team. Aggressive and hard working, the team won the Pacific Southwest Airline Tournament Championship in 1969 and 1970.

After graduation, Francisco enrolled at Southwestern College in 1970. At the time, he has the unique experience of playing on the college’s first club soccer team. It was Francisco’s and the team’s goal to prove that soccer should be added to the Apaches intercollegiate athletic program. They easily convinced the administration by posting an amazing undefeated season with a record of 19-0-1 while competing against well-established intercollegiate programs throughout Southern California.

After Francisco transferred to San Diego State University, he competed on the Aztec’s soccer team in 1969 through 1970 while completing his Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Liberal Arts and Spanish Literature. With teaching now his focus, he dedicated himself to his studies and earned both a Single Subject Credential and a Multiple Subject Credential. In fact, Francisco will tell you, “It was Southwestern College who gave me the foundation to continue with my education goals.” It also defined his future.

Since 1975, Francisco has been a secondary and elementary teacher in the National City School District and the Sweetwater Union School District. Currently he teaches at palmer Way Elementary School. During his teaching tenure, he has always motivated students to pursue higher educational goals and to become productive citizens. As a result, he has participated in a variety of educational and political action organizations. He is a California Teachers Association Life Member and Treasurer of the National Education Association Hispanic Caucus, California Teachers Association-State Member, State Delegate, Political Action Committee Chair and Secretary of the National City Elementary Teachers’ Association, as well as Delegate to the State Democratic Party. Consequently, Francisco’s efforts on behalf of students have been recognized within his community and at the state level; he has been included in Who’s Who in Teaching and awarded the California Teachers Association “We Honor Ours Award.”

Francisco and Lourdes Sevilla, an Administrative Secretary for the School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering, have been married for 33 years. They have three sons, Francisco Xavier, Marcelo Ysaac, and Adrian Zhimon. They are also grandparents of a handsome 4-year old named Yvan Marcelo.
