Gil Warren attended Sweetwater High School where he participated in football and track. A standout on the football team who won the Sweetwater League Championships in 1957 and 1958, Gil was named MVP for the Trojans. In his senior year he was selected to the All-League Team.

After graduation in 1959, Gil participated in football at Chaffey College in Alta Loma, California. A versatile player, he played running back, defensive back, punter and punt returner for the team.

San Diego State took notice and offered him a scholarship after his first year of collegiate football. While at State, Gil played for the legendary coach Don Coryell and was exposed to his winning tradition and his revolutionary offensive innovation on the field. The things he learned at San Diego State influenced Gil for the rest of his career.

After graduating in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education and Social Science, Gil was hired by Castle Park High School to be their head football coach and one of their counselors. His success at the school is legendary. After twenty-six years at the school, he had a win/loss record of 198 wins, 76 losses and four ties. Additionally, he won ten league championships and three CIF in 1968, 1994, and 1996. His 1996 team was one of the best football teams to ever come out of the San Diego region. They went undefeated and topped their competitive year by winning the State CIF Football Championship.

In the mid years of his coaching career, Gil was recruited in the 1980’s by SWC Hall of Fame Head Coach Bob Mears to be the “Apaches” Offensive Coordinator. For nine years, his experience, dedication to his players, and his prolific offense were critical to the program’s success. His mentoring created opportunities for student athletes to continue their education and play at the 4-year level. 1985-1986 SWC and SDSU quarterback Brad Platt says, “Coach Warren was instrumental in developing the qualities I needed to possess to become a Division 1 quarterback. Under his guidance, I became a leader, a student of the game, and worked hard to improve my defensive recognition skills.”

In 2006, Gil transferred to newly built Olympian High School where he was hired to establish their interscholastic football program. He quickly achieved success by winning two league championships.

During his forty-six years of coaching, teaching, and counseling, Gil has had many honors bestowed upon him: San Diego section C.I.F. Coach of the Year (1994), National Football Foundation- College Hall of Fame- High School Coach of the Year (1995) and Hall of Champions-Coaching Legend of High School Football (2000).
