Bio

Patti graduated from Parkland High School in El Paso, Texas in 1963, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, varsity band and captain of the drill team. As captain, Patti made it her goal to increase school spirit at athletic competitions—the drill team was one way to do it. Her commitment to the school and its teams was obvious to everyone who went to the events.

Following high school, Patti attended The University of Texas at El Paso from 1966 to 1968 where she was a member of their famous marching band. While in college, she participated in the Texas Association of Bowling and was the 1966 State Singles Bowling Champion.

Patti came to California and raised her three children in El Cajon. During the years they were in school—1975 to 1987—she was involved with various fundraising committees. She not only raised money for her own children, but other young people so they could participate in sports, the band and a dance team. Her efforts continued by helping the PTA fund their activities.

In 1992 Southwestern College was lucky enough to select Patti as our Cheerleading Advisor. Under her leadership, the squad started by supporting the football team and expanded their role to cheering at all men’s and women’s basketball games.

But her efforts didn’t stop at just involving the team in athletic events. She started a 50/50 raffle—the funds going to the Susan G. Komen organization for breast cancer awareness. The raffle is still held in October of each year. When the Cedar Fire hit San Diego in 2003, she and the squad helped raised money to replace uniforms for three high school cheerleaders whose families lost everything.

Under Patti’s leadership, the team reached a level of excellence that had never been achieved before at the College. In 2005, the team began entering state and national collegiate cheer competitions for the first time. Since then, the squad has won 10 first-place titles, seven second-place titles and third-place twice. Because of her team’s reputation of excellence, they are invited to attend cheer camp each summer, enabling them to qualify each year for the NCAA Collegiate Cheer Championships in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Patti’s best memories as Cheerleading Advisor at Southwestern College are—supporting the men’s and women’s basketball teams during league play and also in playoffs; being able to cheer at the men’s basketball State Final Game because Coach Cosentino helped to get them there; being present at this year’s football team’s Bowl Game win over Santa Monica City College; traveling with the baseball team to the finals in Southern California (first place) and State playoffs (second place); and, participating in all the national cheer championships—but especially in the 2007 when the squad came in first place in all three events they entered that year.

Patti has been married 45 years to her wonderful husband, Tom. They have three children: Rhonda (spouse, Junior), Michael, and Jason (spouse, Janell). They have six grandchildren: CJ (age 21 & will graduate from UCSD with honors this June), Austin (17), Madeline (16), Jonah (13), Celeste (13) and Dominic (5).

Congratulations Patti Moore! Southwestern College is distinctly honored tonight to acknowledge your commitment to the cheer team and the athletic program, as well as your efforts on behalf of our community. It is with pleasure that we induct you into the 2013 Athletic Hall of Fame.
