Athletic Training Internship Program

What is Athletic Training?

Athletic Trainers are recognized by the American Medical Association as health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Students who want to become certified athletic trainers must earn a degree from an accredited athletic training curriculum. Accredited programs include formal instruction in areas such as injury/illness prevention, first aid and emergency care, assessment of injury/illness, human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic modalities, and nutrition. Classroom learning is enhanced through clinical education experiences. More than 70 percent of certified athletic trainers hold at least a master’s degree.

Southwestern College Athletic Training Internship

Our Sportsmedicine department will accept a few students at the end of each Summer in preparation for the busy Fall Season.  This is a one semester internship class that is competitive and requires an application / interview process.  If admitted, the student is required to register for Professional Development 290 (PD 290) course and meet the expectations to receive a grade in that class.

Our staff is responsible for providing hands on experience and education for these students who are interested in this field.  We provide the foundation for them to be a quality candidate into competitive athletic training programs.
