Our Purpose

B.A.R.S is a Communication arts fundraiser designed to raise financial and material support for community service outreach programs put on by The CAALI Project, the Black Student Union and Generation Voices. This year’s proceeds go towards supporting children of incarcerated parents and the homeless community during the holiday season.

The Rap:

Calling all rappers, poets, actors, singers, storytellers and performing artists! This year we are hosting a performance competition where the top performer can win a $200 prize.

How To Participate:

  • Write two, 3-minute memorized poems or raps, centered in the theme of BARS.
  • All performances must be written by the performer.
  • All performances must address the event theme, BARS. (The word and meaning of BARS is open to interpretation. Feel free to openly interpret).

On the day of the performance, performers will draw numbers for performance order. There will be two rounds.

  • Round 1:

All performers perform. Each performance will be judged by a panel of 5 judges. Judges will score the performance on a scale of 0 – 10 (ten being the best). Top and bottom scores will be dropped. The remaining three scores will be added up and the total becomes the performers score. The top five performers will move on to the next round.

  • Round 2:

The person with the top score from round 1 will perform first. They will perform a second poem of their choice. (Poems during this round do not have to be centered in the theme of BARS) Following performers present according to who had the next best score. This round will be scored by all audience members in attendance.

Each audience member who made a donation will be given tickets to cast their vote. They may cast their vote during any time of the competition by putting their ticket into the appropriate voter box. If they have multiple voting tickets, they can cast their vote for multiple performers or place all their votes on one performer.

At the end of the round, all votes will be tallied and the winner will be awarded a $100 prize.

Performances may be in any of the following forms:

  • Rap
  • Poetry
  • Spoken Word
