Pick six: Jaguars have the numbers over Griffins

It was a performance that might be hard to replicate for some time after host Southwestern College defeated conference rival Grossmont College, 42-3, last Saturday at DeVore Stadium.
The Jaguars (1-1 in conference, 5-2 overall) thoroughly out-played the Griffins (0-2 in conference, 0-7 overall) in almost every facet of the game, particularly on defense.
Southwestern out-gained Grossmont 375-180 in total offensive yards. But it was the defensive ledger that stood out.
Jaguar defenders combined to make six interceptions in the game (five of which officially counted), returning three for touchdowns, while recording six sacks and one fumble recovery.
"Six interceptions —that's phenomenal!" SWC head coach Ed Carberry exclaimed.

Southwestern, coming off a disappointing 45-7 loss to host Saddleback College in its conference opener the previous week, never trailed in last Saturday's game.
The Jags took a 7-0 lead on a 25-yard scoring run by Keylan Chapman and an extra-point conversion by D.J. Del Fierro.
The scoring drive took just three plays and covered 32 yards in 1:23.
Grossmont rebounded with a 10-play drive that covered 58 yards in 3:27 to end the first quarter with a 30-yard field goal by Jack Browning to trim the SWC lead to 7-3.
It was all Jaguars after that as the hosts ended the game with 35 unanswered points.

Southwestern took a 21-3 halftime lead as Chapman scored on a five-yard run and quarterback Brad Jeremiah (Christian) scored on a one-yard run. Del Fierro supplied both extra points as the hosts made the most of what they could manage offensively.
Jeremiah entered the game in a back-up role after starter Josh Owen suffered an upper body injury in the game against Saddelback.
Jeremiah and the Southwestern offense seemed to gain confidence as the game wore on though it was the Jags defense that definitely made a statement in the second half.
Devin Brown (Morse) upped the SWC lead to 28-3 by returning an intercepted pass 20 yards for a touchdown.

Jadarius Horton (Charlotte, N.C.) returned an intercepted pass 62 yards for a touchdown to make the score 35-3.
Shawn Browder (St. Louis, Mo.) returned an intercepted pass 24 yards for a touchdown to increase the lead to 42-3.

Southwestern nearly had a fourth pick six in the fourth quarter when Anthony Quinney (Mobile, Ala.) intercepted a pass near his own goal line to thwart a late Grossmont scoring bid and returned the ball 83 yards before being tackled just before reaching the end zone.
Isaac Wright (St. Augustine) nabbed a sixth interception in the game on a flying leap along the sideline but had the pick nullified by a penalty.

The Jags punished both quarterbacks the Griffins sent to the field. Joaquin Quintana-McKinney (Serra) completed nine of 20 attempts for 79 yards while Lukas Arthur (Loveland, Colo.) finished the game 11-for-23 with 84 yards and five picks.
Jeremiah completed 11 of 18 passing attempts for 129 yards with two interceptions.
Southwestern out-gained Grossmont 254-60 in rushing yards to take the pressure off the SWC passing game.
Deandre Daniels (St. Augustine) returned to the lineup and rushed for 132 yards on 13 carries while Chapman (DeSoto, Texas) rushed for 80 yards on 13 attempts, scoring twice.
Daniels ripped off one 45-yard gainer while Chapman broke loose for one 25-yard carry.
Treyvion Davies (Olympian) had four carries for 24 yards while Omari Green (Navarre, Fla.) had three carries for 22 yards.
Jeremiah carried the ball twice for four yards, plunging in for one score.

Terry Wright (St. Augustine) caught five passes for 80 yards, including one catch and run that measured 45 yards.
Davion Johnson (Cleveland, Ohio) had two catches for 27 yards, including one for 21 yards.
Del Fierro (Eastlake) was six-for-six on PAT conversions but hooked a medium-range field goal attempt just wide.
Lorenzo Perry (Bonita Vista) recorded SWC's fifth interception of the game. The five picks went for 189 return yards.
Andrew Schasa (Lincoln) keyed the hosts with six tackles. He and teammate Isaac Wright (St. Augustine) both had five unassisted tackles.
Schasa notched two sacks and three tackles for a loss. Ubaldo Torres (Chula Vista), Louis Shimoum (Sacramento) and Sekeli Manu (Lacey, Wash.) all recorded one sack while Josh McCurty (Eastlake) and Brian Williams (Chipley, Fla.) both shared one sack.
Altogether the Jaguars recorded 10 tackles for a loss. Williams was credited with a fumble recovery.
"We wanted to play hard, play solid football and not give up," Horton said. "Just because we scored, we still needed to continue to play defense."
