Dionicio Monarrez, Jr. has resigned as head football coach

Southwestern College has accepted the resignation of head coach, Dionicio Monarrez, Jr. Monarrez was promoted to the head coaching role in 2021, following twenty seasons as an assistant coach/defensive coordinator and 35 years coaching football.

As the 11th head coach in SWC Football history, Coach Monarrez is a pillar in the athletic department and helped lay the groundwork for the standards of excellence Southwestern College now has as a football program. Monarrez's experience as a football coach is parallel to those at the highest levels. His strength and conditioning program have been part of the Jaguar way and has proven to advance player movement quality to enhance performance.

Coach Monarrez (coach Mo) would like to thank all the players and coaches he has coached and coached with over the past 22 years while at Southwestern College. "It comes with a heavy heart that I resign, Monarrez said. You and I will always be Jaguars. Thank you coaches for the countless hours and energy you have put into our student-athletes and program. Thank you, student-athletes, for being part of our program and my life. I'd like to thank a couple of guys instrumental in me being a Jaguar:  Walt Justice, thank you for hiring me and letting me coach and learn. But most of all for being a great friend. Thank you, Ed Carberry, for believing in me and guiding and teaching me how to be a great coach. The many Carberry ism's I will never forget. "Find a way," "100 words you can say that are positive", "shake a hand of a coach before you leave". "88 out the gate". Thank you, buddy."

Southwestern College Director of Athletics Ron Valenzuela stated, "Southwestern College is extremely grateful to Coach Monarrez for his loyalty, commitment, and hard work that he has poured into SWC over the last two decades. I want to personally thank Coach Mo for serving as head coach for football and embracing and partnering with the college campus to develop men through higher education and the sport of football. I understand and respect his desire for this change.

Monarrez will remain on faculty, and we wish nothing but the best for Coach Mo and his family in the future. Dionicio will forever remain a valued member of the Jaguar football family.

We are confident that the head coaching job at Southwestern will be a highly coveted position and look forward to finding the next head coach of our storied Jaguar football program. A national search will begin immediately."
