Bonus Basketball Leads To Over Time (11/14/23)

After winning the first home game of the season, the Jaguars basketball team hosted the Hawks from Santiago Canyon College. An edge-of-your-seat match took place that needed Over Time to be decided.

"We have to win games this year by playing defense," said Jaguars Head Coach Tyrone Shelley before the game about this Jaguars offense. "It's going to be hard to replace a guy that led the state in Assists, and another guy that was second in scoring. We need to win as a team collectively."

The Jaguars offense started the match slow. Southwestern needed three possessions of the ball to get their first successful basket. The Hawks quickly created a gap of thirteen points over the Jaguars.

Southwestern roared back when substitutions were made in the first half. The Jaguars defense forced turnovers and after successfully scoring five times in a row twice, the Jaguars went into the half-time break down by three.

The second half of the match was just as tightly contested. The Jaguars benefited from sloppy defense from the Hawks. Dirty fouls by the Hawks made a clean comeback possible for the Jaguars. With less than a second of time on the clock, Southwestern had the opportunity to win. However, a missed free throw by the Jaguars pushed the game into Over Time.

Ultimately, the Jaguars lost to the Hawks in Over Time by four points.

"It's unfortunate. We had an opportunity to win the game in regulation, it just didn't happen," said Shelley. "When you play a team like that you need to be near perfect, and we were almost perfect. I don't like moral victories. We had a chance to win, a loss like this should keep these guys motivated."
