Jags Weekly Basketball Round Up (Feb. 3 – Feb. 7)

The Men's Basketball (16-8, 9-3) team dropped to third place in the PCAC after their loss against MiraCosta (18-7, 11-2), while the Women's Basketball (5-19, 1-9) team pulled off a huge upset victory at Imperial Valley (16-9, 8-3).

Coming into the MiraCosta match the men's team was riding a four-game win streak, and the stakes for this game were high. Sole possession of second place in the conference was on the line, and the Jags would have to do it without wing Julian Soares who was injured in practice.

Devin Dunn started the Jags scoring with a three. After the first five minutes of intense play, MiraCosta led 9-8. Ayden Lockett also had a great start with seven points, but turnovers began to haunt the Jags.

MiraCosta led at the half 28-23.

MiraCosta's DaVaughn McCrumb scored nine points to open the half, while the Jags struggled to answer until Lockett turned up his aggression, getting to the free-throw line. Midway through the second half, the Jags rallied to cut the deficit to 10 but couldn't get over the hump.

Final score 64-51, MiraCosta.

"We got off to a slow start," Assistant Coach Dennis Murphy said postgame. "We didn't follow the game plan as we should have and just lost this tough one."

The Spartans moved to second place behind San Diego City, while Southwestern fell to third. The team sits 13th out of 15th in the projected 32CA Southern California Tournament Bracket.

Ayden Lockett: 17 PTS, 7 REB, 5 AST

Derek Edmond: 11 PTS, 7 REB, 3/6 on three's
