Southwestern colleges eclipses last year’s win total

Win their 10-2 win over Imperial Valley on Friday, the Southwestern College softball team won its 7th game of the season, eclipsing last year's win total of 6. With 15 games remaining on the schedule, the team is looking to add more wins to their ledger.

The 2021-22 season had its share of challenges with covid and not having a team the previous season. This year's squad, while dealing with some adversity at the beginning of the season, has regrouped and is playing well under 1st year Head Coach Michael Gross.  Coach Gross had a goal of doubling last years win total and the team is on their way to reaching that goal.  Coach Gross took over in August after the departure of Coach Yasmin Mossadeghi. He and Assistant Head Coach Katrina Simmons have strived to create a culture that is heavy on team accountability and becoming a family on and off the field. The team has had several team bonding activities including a "Friendsgiving "and holiday party, as well as doing some different things off the field such as yoga and swim practices. These new ideas have helped the team coalesce and become a strong unit even through the rough patches of the season.

The team started out slowly as 2 new pitchers to the team were getting their legs underneath them. As pitchers has gotten stronger and more confident, the wins have come, and the team has become tremendously more competitive. The team has a 4-3 record through the month of March, losing close games to #1 Palomar, San Diego Mesa, and Riverside. Wins against San Diego City, Imperial, Saddleback and Golden West have helped improve the teams record and given the team a boost for the final 6 weeks of the season.

Coach Gross and Coach Simmons are out on recruiting trail. If you have interest in playing for Southwestern next season. Please contact Coach Gross at mgross@swccd.edu
