Jaguars Complete Opening Weekend of the 2024 Season with 3 Consecutive Wins

Jaguars Complete Opening Weekend of the 2024 Season with 3 Consecutive Wins.

The Southwestern College softball team (3-1) opened the 2024 campaign on the road and returned home on a three-game winning streak. Excellent pitching and solid hitting proved to be key for the Jags who started the year with a bang with wins over El Camino College and a double header sweep over College of the Desert.

Game 1: Southwestern 2, Citrus 3

The Jags travelled to Citrus College for a 3-way event on Friday facing the Owls of Citrus College and El Camino College. In the opener, Maddie Mendez (Santana HS) was strong in the circle and went 6.0 innings allowing three runs, but the bats hadn't come alive yet and the Jags lost 3-2.

Game 2: Southwestern 3, El Camino 2

In the second game of the evening. Freshman Yazi Clark fired 7.0 innings, allowing just five hits and two earned runs. The bats lit up in the sixth inning when Jordyn Beatty (Santana HS) hit a game tying double. In the seventh inning, with two outs, Freshman Alex Magana (Bonita Vista HS) stroked a two-out single. Consecutive hits by Dani Sandez (Otay Ranch), Rachel Varela (El Toro HS) loaded the bases and then Gloria "Gogo" Rodriguez (Mar Vista) smoked a base hit to center field to give the Jags the lead. Clark and the defense sent El Camino down in order in the seventh inning to give the Jags their first win of the season.

Game 1: Southwestern 8, College of the Desert 0

(6 innings)

On Saturday, the Jags dominated College of the Desert in a pair of run-rule victories.  The Jags bats were active, and the pitching was dynamic in the 8-0 win in six innings. Sophomore Izzy Tobias (Westview HS) was impressive in the circle, allowing one hit and striking out seven batters. Jordyn Beatty had three RBIs while Gogo Rodriguez and Maddie Mendez each had three hits in the game.  Caliyah Giroux (Eastlake HS) got her first college hit smacking a double down the third base line which helped start a rally.

Game 2: Southwestern 14, College of the Desert 3

(5 innings)

Maddie Mendez re-entered the circle and pitched 5.0 innings, allowing three unearned runs. The Jags banged out 13 hits with Maddie Mendez and Yazi Clark each getting three and Rachel Varela netting two. Jordyn Beatty and Savannah Salon (Chula Vista HS) recorded doubles and Varela and Clark roped triples in the win.

Weekend Notes

Last year, it took until Game 16 for the team to notch three wins and this year's squad was able to match that mark in the first weekend. While it is early, there is a lot to be excited about for the 2024 season.

Varela batted .385 while Mendez hit .583 and Rodriguez hit a stunning .636 over the weekend. Jordyn Beatty had 8 RBIs to lead the way.
